The city of Wellesley, Massachusetts, has initiated the deployment of its second phase of energy efficient LED streetlight fixtures. In 2010, the Wellesley Municipal Light Plant (MLP) installed LED retrofit kits on 105 existing metal halide decorative streetlights. The LED luminaire chosen for the first phase project was the Sylvania Post Top LED Retrofit Kit. The same LED streetlight kit will also be used in subsequent retrofits of decorative post-top streetlights.
Based on the success of Wellesley’s first installation, city officials chose to pursue a second phase retrofit of an additional 400 decorative streetlights. The existing 175 watt metal halide lamps are being replaced with 40 watt equivalent LED luminaires. “Since the project was completed last year, we have seen a tremendous reduction in energy consumption. We have also seen significant savings in maintenance costs because our crews are not constantly out in the field re-lamping streetlights,” said Donald Newell, superintendent for the Wellesley MLP. A complete report on the performance, energy savings and energy efficiency of the new fixtures is expected in about two weeks and will be published in the local newspaper, The Wellesley Townsman.
The city of Wellesley is currently lit by approximately 3,975 streetlights. The majority of the city’s streetlights are high pressure sodium cobrahead streetlights, and according to Newell, the payback period is still too long to make it cost- effective for the municipality to pursue replacing those fixtures at this time. “We focused on replacing the decorative fixtures because the difference in energy efficiency between LEDs and metal halide lamps is so significant,” said Newell. MLP has established a calculated charge for the energy consumption of the LED fixtures which has resulted in significant energy cost savings for the city of Wellesley. “The municipality and the public are extremely pleased with the new streetlights,” said Newell.
