West Union, Iowa, awarded $1,000,000 for LED streetlights and other fixtures

The city of West Union, Iowa, has been awarded $1,000,000 to deploy energy efficient streetlights. The funds, from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, will be used to install approximately eighty new streetlights, including LED and metal halide fixtures. The project will be deployed in a six block area in the West Union downtown. The award will be used to purchase and install fifty-one LED streetlight fixtures and thirty-seven metal halide streetlights. The new streetlight project involves the installation of luminaires, poles, and wiring.
West Union currently has thirty-four 400 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights. These streetlights are all scheduled for replacement. While the majority of the new streetlights will use LED luminaires, “Because of higher illumination requirements, we will put 250 watt metal halide fixtures at each intersection,” said Jason Cooper, lead engineer at the Conservation Design Forum, which is developing the project for the city of West Union.
The Iowa Department of Economic Development selected West Union as one of its Green Pilot communities. This pilot project will establish best practices and allow the city to serve as a model for other communities to become more environmentally friendly. According to Robin Bostrom, executive director for Fayette County Economic Development, “We are focused on energy efficiency but also interested in preserving the historic aesthetic of our downtown area, which is why the project includes historic LED fixtures.”
The scheduled release date of the request for proposals (RFP) is June 22, 2010. West Union officials anticipate starting the project in August 2010. The RFP will be advertised on the West Union website as well as trade publications.
