The city of West Valley, Utah, is nearing completion of its first LED streetlight project, which was funded by a grant of $160,000 from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The project involves the conversion of 210 high pressure sodium fixtures to LED technology.

The LED streetlights, part of a new roadway construction project in West Valley, are located on 3500 South between 2700 West and Bangerter Highway. The project involves new construction of fixtures, assemblies and poles. The poles and streetlights are owned and maintained by the city of West Valley. The city currently has approximately 6,600 streetlights.

West Valley transportation engineer, Erik Brondum, anticipates that the project will be completed shortly. Although satisfied with the LED fixtures’ performance, Brondum highlighted their high capital costs: “Due to the high cost of LEDs, we will most likely consider induction lighting for any future streetlight projects.”

The city of West Valley has calculated annual savings of about $33,000 in maintenance costs as a result of converting to LED fixtures. Projected energy savings over twenty years are expected to be $79,000.
