The city of Wilber, Nebraska, has been awarded funds from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program for an LED streetlight replacement project. The city of Wilber will spend $152,681 on the project, of which $122,145 are EECBG funds and $30,536 are local matching funds. The project involves replacement of approximately 150 existing mercury vapor and high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures.

The LED streetlight replacement will utilize existing poles, arms and wiring. “The majority of the fixtures targeted for replacement are along Hwy 103 and Hwy 41. We will replace the existing 400 watt mercury vapor streetlights with LEDs,” said Mike Pospisil, utility superintendent for the city of Wilber. City officials expect to reduce energy consumption by up to 50%, and possibly more, if lower wattage equivalent LED fixtures are installed.

Pospisil plans to begin the LED streetlight installation in November 2010. Only city-owned streetlights will be replaced under this deployment, and Wilber city crews will be responsible for installation and maintenance. City officials will issue a request for proposals (RFP) and project specifications in late October 2010.
