Yuba City, California, plans $1.35 million program to install 3,300 LED streetlights

Yuba City, California, will soon seek bidders for a large scale deployment of LED streetlights. By using a low interest loan of $1,345,487 from the California Energy Commission (CEC), Yuba City will be able to perform a city-wide conversion of its existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights to energy efficient LED fixtures. Final approval of the CEC financing and the streetlight replacement project from the municipality’s city council is pending. The loan is expected to be authorized by the CEC in September and accepted by the city council in October 2011. Initial city plans are to use the CEC loan to replace approximately 3,300 existing streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures.
“In preparation for the city’s upcoming conversion project we are planning on setting up a demonstration area where we will install several LED fixtures. The demonstration is planned for the summer and will be conducted separately from the city-wide conversion,” said Marc Mattox, assistant engineer for the city of Yuba City. City officials are currently in the process of choosing an LED fixture for the demonstration area.
According to Mattox, the city will issue a Request for Proposals/Request for Qualifications (RFP/RFQ) for the 3,300 streetlight installation. “The city is looking for a turnkey installation from proposers,” said Mattox. Complete project specifications will be available in the bid document, which is expected to be issued in July 2011.
