Broken Bow, Nebraska, awarded $189,580 and seeks LED streetlight fixtures for testing

The city of Broken Bow, Nebraska, has received a total of $189,580 from the federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and local funding sources for energy efficient streetlights. According to city officials, the federal grant request was written specifically for metal halide streetlights, but the city is also considering LED streetlight technology.

According to Doug Staab, electrical superintendent for the city of Broken Bow, “We would like to evaluate LED streetlights, but we have not had good response from manufacturers for product testing and evaluations.” Staab hopes to decide on which technology to deploy within the next thirty days, and encourages manufacturers and distributors to call the electrical superintendent’s office (308-872-5102) for more information.

The city of Broken Bow intends to replace existing 150 watt and 250 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with energy efficient fixtures. This project, considered a first phase, will replace approximately 250 HPS fixtures. The location of the energy efficient streetlight deployment will be arterial roadways and the business district in Broken Bow. According to Staab, as more funding becomes available, the long term goal of the city is to replace additional existing HPS streetlights in residential areas.

As a municipal utility, Broken Bow will see immediate savings from the reduced energy consumption of energy efficient streetlights. Initial calculations indicate approximately $25,000 in annual savings by switching to energy efficient streetlights. Staab indicated that the project is scheduled to begin within ninety days.
