Officials surprised and pleased with LED streetlights in Appleton, Wisconsin

Appleton, Wisconsin, plans to retrofit existing roadway streetlights to newer and more energy efficient LED fixtures.
City officials have been running a six light pilot program to test and evaluate the new LED streetlights. The success of the pilot program has led city officials to determine that additional retrofits are warranted.
Appleton has received $112,700 in Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funds from the Department of Energy. The state of Wisconsin is distributing the awards to eligible cities and counties through a competitive application process. The EECBG award will be used to retrofit 100 existing streetlights in the city of Appleton. City officials have not yet set a date to issue a Request for Proposal.
The six light pilot includes the products of LED lighting companies Beta LED and Leotek. According to Mike Hardy, city of Appleton traffic engineer, “My biggest concern going forward is light output ten years from now. My other concern is the color temperature of the light. However, I am pleasantly surprised at how well these lights have been performing.”
