Cary, North Carolina, receives $35,000 for LED streetlight project

Cary, North Carolina, has received $35,000 from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funds for an LED streetlight pilot project. The funds have been allocated, and city officials are in the process of developing and issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP). The RFP is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2010.
Cary currently leases its streetlights from Progress Energy, an investor-owned utility which serves North Carolina. However, new developments from Progress Energy will enable the town to purchase its own lights and buy down the cost of the fixture. Cary will only be billed for energy use, installation and maintenance under a revised rate structure created specifically for LED streetlights.
According to Kyle Hubert, Traffic and Transportation Engineer for the town of Cary, the pilot will most likely be implemented on town-owned streetlights. Hubert has still not determined the number of streetlights which are targeted for replacement, but hopes to maximize the number as the cost of the LED fixtures continues to decrease.
