Galt, California, has applied for $680,000 in grants to fund the deployment of LED streetlights.
The city of Galt has applied for an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) formula-based award and a separate, competitive grant from the EECBG in partnership with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD).
The U.S. Department of Energy funds the EECBG program and the California Energy Commission administers the awards for the state. Galt has applied for a competitive grant of $680,000 with the SMUD. If it is not awarded the competitive grant, Galt will receive a formula grant of $133,736 to be used for LED streetlights.
The city’s plan is to replace 680 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures, according to Sandra Kiriu, principal planner for the city of Galt. Once funds are awarded and allocated, the city will issue a request for proposals to solicit bids for the LED streetlight project.
The California Energy Commission was scheduled to meet on May 12, 2010, to review municipal applications.
“If we receive the EECBG award for our streetlight project, we hope to begin the project during 2010 and complete it by summer 2011,” said Kiriu. The project will focus predominantly on arterial lights, with less emphasis on residential streets. The majority of the project will be generally located on the west side of Hwy 99.
