Morgan Hill, California, receives $157,000 for LED streetlights

Morgan Hill, California, will use a $157,000 grant from the US Department of Energy to convert 200 high pressure sodium streetlights to energy efficient LED streetlights by June 2010.

 

As a recipient of the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG), the city of Morgan Hill will launch the first phase of a five year initiative to convert all city-owned streetlights to LED streetlights.

 

“We will most likely use the PG&E turnkey program, from which we will receive an instant rebate for the cost of the fixtures,” said Mori Struve, deputy director of public works for the city of Morgan Hill.

 

The city will also benefit from PG&E’s revised rate structure for the billing of energy consumed by the LED streetlights. By using its own contractor to install the LED streetlights, Morgan Hill will purchase as many fixtures as possible using the $157,000 grant from the Department of Energy.

 

By converting existing high pressure sodium streetlights to LED streetlights, Morgan Hill anticipates annual electricity cost savings of 40% annually for each replaced streetlight.
