New Jersey cities to receive over $1.5 million in federal stimulus funds for LED streetlight programs

The New Jersey cities of Camden, Union City and Jersey City have received an allocation of over $1.5 million in federal stimulus funds to purchase energy efficient LED streetlights.

 

The funding comes from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.

 

The office of US Senator Robert Menendez reported that $750,000 has been allocated to Camden, New Jersey, for the purchase and installation of energy efficient LED streetlights.

 

Mayor Brian P. Stack, announced that Union City, New Jersey, has received an allocation of $521,000 for LED streetlight deployments.

 

Jersey City, New Jersey, will use $291,214 to replace 45 LED streetlights along Martin Luther King Boulevard in an area of Jersey City that is being redeveloped.

 

New Jersey officials estimate energy use reduction of as much as 70% after switching to LED streetlights—all while providing equal or better illumination than existing lighting. Officials also expect lighting life expectancy of three to four times that of current high intensity discharge sources like high pressure sodium or metal halide lights. By switching to LED technology, municipalities typically see reductions in energy costs of 50%.
