The city of Sunnyvale, California, will issue a request for proposals (RFP) for a large deployment of LED streetlights.

The RFP, valued at $1.142 million, is scheduled for release on May 14, 2010. City officials will establish the number of streetlights to be replaced based on bid responses.

The project will be funded by an award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.

The LED streetlight replacement program aligns with Sunnyvale’s climate action plan. Among the stated goals of the action plan is to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and reduce streetlight maintenance costs.

According to David Gakle, principal buyer for the city of Sunnyvale, “The majority of the streetlights we will be replacing are high pressure sodium (HPS) and we would like to replace as many as possible.” The RFP will be publicized in the Sunnyvale Sun and on DemandStar.com.
