Iowa cities of Urbandale and Ankeny receive $350,000 for LED streetlights

The suburban Iowa cities of Urbandale and Ankeny will be regional leaders in the implementation of LED streetlight technology. With funds awarded from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, these two cities plan on converting over 400 existing streetlights to LED fixtures.
Currently there are no LED streetlights in the Des Moines, Iowa, metropolitan area.
Ankeny and Urbandale applied jointly for the EECBG funds, with Urbandale serving as the lead municipality on the application. Urbandale will receive $210,000 and Ankeny will receive $140,000. Additional matching funds are provided through utility rebates, local matching funds and an EECBG formula grant which was awarded earlier in the year.
“The LED streetlight conversion project will be conducted in three phases in both cities. The hard deadline to finish the project is June 2012,” said John Konior, assistant to the city manager of Urbandale. The Urbandale LED streetlight project will focus on the Douglas Avenue historic neighborhood and will replace 215 existing fixtures. Although, the city has not conducted an LED streetlight pilot, energy savings and the longer life of LED traffic and crosswalk signal lights led city officials to explore LED streetlighting options.
“We are looking forward to being the first city in the area to use LED streetlights,” said Konior.
A request for proposals is expected to be issued in August 2010.
