Six commercial LED street lighting products were selected for awards in the second annual Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) Solid State Lighting (SSL) Design Competition.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the International Association of Lighting Designers, the NGL competition was launched in 2008 to promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED luminaires for general illumination in commercial lighting applications.
The panel of twelve judges was drawn from across the architectural lighting design community, independently evaluated the products be assessing their lighted performance and appearance, construction and photometric data.
The judges scored each entry on the following set of criteria: · Color appearance · Color rendering · Appropriate illuminance · Appropriate luminance · Application effectiveness · Aesthetic appearance and style · Serviceability and replacement · No off-state power use · Dark-sky friendly · Adjustability/flexibility
GE Lighting Solutions’ Evolve LED R150 Roadway luminaire was recognized as “Best in Class.”
The judging panel cited the GE Evolve LED Series Roadway Medium Cobrahead for its “good pavement uniformity, effective glare control, and reduced light trespass.” The GE luminaire’s nested concentric directional reflectors and its low profile, die-cast housing were also cited by the judges.
Five other designers were recognized for their street/roadway fixtures: - Cooper Lighting was recognized for its Streetworks OVH LED Area Luminaire; - Philips Hadco was recognized for its Evolaire Street and Area LED Luminaire; - BetaLED was recognized for its LEDway Streetlight; - LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. was recognized for its Satellite S96M luminaire; and - Philips Lumec was recognized for its RoadStar luminaire.
