The city of Loma Linda, California has been awarded $123,200 in federal stimulus funds for a citywide LED streetlight deployment project. The award is funded through the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. Loma Linda city officials plan on replacing nearly one third of the city’s high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED luminaires. Long term city goals include converting all Loma Linda streetlights to LED fixtures.
According to Jeff Peterson, associate engineer for the city of Loma Linda, “The city of Loma Linda is a strong advocate for energy efficiency and conservation, and the switch to LED streetlights aligns well with the overall environmental plan for the city.” While the city has not conducted a formal pilot program to test LED fixtures, engineers have consulted with area communities and evaluated pilots and tests from other cities, such as Los Angeles. Several manufacturers have also supplied LED fixtures to Loma Linda for evaluation purposes. “We looked at a variety of energy efficient lighting options and for this project we decided to focus strictly on LEDs,” said Peterson.
The city of Loma Linda is currently awaiting a transfer of funds from the California Energy Commission (CEC), the state administrator for the EECBG program, before soliciting competitive bids. The request for proposals (RFP) will be advertised in trade publications as well as on the city’s website. Peterson will issue the RFP immediately following the receipt of funds from the CEC.
