Southwest Washington cities begin LED streetlight installation with BetaLED and Leotek fixtures

The three Southwest Washington cities of Camas, Washougal and Battle Ground are in the process of deploying the first phase of energy efficient LED streetlights in each municipality. The tri-city LED streetlight program is led by the city of Washougal in partnership with Camas and Battle Ground and involves up to 250 new LED streetlight fixtures in the three cities. The projects are funded by an award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, with rebates from local energy provider Clark Public Utilities (CPU) and subsidies from the Bonneville Power Authority (BPA).
“The cities have already installed approximately 30 fixtures and should have another 200 installed within the next two months,” said Bill Hibbs, street lighting specialist for CPU. The fixtures chosen for the three city’s installations are manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting from Racine, Wisconsin, and Leotek from Milpitas, California. The new energy efficient LED streetlights are expected to reduce each city’s energy consumption by approximately 30 percent. “We are treating this as a pilot project to test the LED streetlight fixtures. I believe that over time as the fixtures become increasingly efficient and the price comes down, it will be feasible to conduct a large scale roll out of LED streetlights,” said Hibbs.
In addition to the tri-city partnership, the city of Camas is independently considering and evaluating decorative LED streetlight fixtures. The acorn-style LED streetlights will be selected for one subdivision. According to city officials, between 20 and 30 decorative fixtures will be installed and evaluated.
