The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) board of commissioners will vote on a proposal today that will allow the city and county of San Francisco to consider LED or induction luminaires as preferred street lighting.
The city of San Francisco is home to approximately 43,000 streetlights, of which 20,000 are managed by the SFPUC. Pacific Gas and Electric maintains the other 23,000 streetlights.
In the 2006-2007 fiscal year, the SFPUC’s high pressure sodium streetlight replacement budget was $5.6 million, and the budget for streetlight maintenance was $1.8 million.
