Stamford, Connecticut, is the recipient of $600,000 which it will use to retrofit 1,500 existing streetlights with LED streetlights.

Stamford has received $500,000 from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program plus an additional $100,000 in local matching funds. This funding will pay for the first, major step in a larger city initiative to retrofit all of Stamford’s streetlights over a five year period.

City officials anticipate installation to begin in the spring of 2010 and plan to retrofit 1,500 streetlights with LED luminaires.  Pilot LED streetlight installations in Stamford have already demonstrated electricity consumption decreases of 62 percent. Since 1998, Stamford has reduced energy use by over eleven million kilowatt hours annually through energy efficiency projects. These projects have resulted in savings of over $1.26 million annually.

City of Stamford grants administrator, Karen Cammarota, said “We expect to issue the RFP in two months.”
