Greenfield, Indiana, a municipality that is an Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) community, has purchased 1,500 new LED streetlight fixtures for its first major installation of energy efficient streetlighting. IMPA was awarded $5 million in funds from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The funding for LED streetlighting projects was distributed among the twenty IMPA member communities. The fixture chosen for the city of Greenfield installation is GE Lighting Solution’s Evolve LED streetlight.
“All of the IMPA communities participated in choosing the LED fixture which worked best to meet DOE and community specifications. The process narrowed the choices to three vendors, and the project specifications were best met by the GE Lighting fixture,” said Guy Titus, operations manager for Greenfield Power and Light. In addition to the GE Lighting fixtures, IMPA members had narrowed their choices to LED fixtures manufactured by Relume and BetaLED. The multiple fixtures were evaluated based on manufacturer claims and actual field installations. “It was important to us to evaluate illumination, see how the fixture actually looked installed on our streets, and to ensure that visually the fixture was consistent with the look of our community,” said Titus.
Approximately 750 of the new fixtures have already been installed. City officials hope that improved weather conditions will permit crews to complete the project within the next three months. An component added to the new fixtures is Roam monitoring technology which enables the municipal utility to accurately compare the new LED fixtures to the existing mercury vapor and high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights.
The city of Greenfield currently owns and maintains approximately 4,500 streetlights. According to city officials, initial plans call for replacing as many of the cobrahead fixtures as possible. However, if additional funding does become available, the city’s nearly 2,000 post top fixtures would be targeted for replacement with LED fixtures as well.
