An award program created to recognize and promote excellence in LED commercial lighting luminaires, the 2012 Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) Outdoor Design Competition launched on June 18, 2012. NGL competition partners include the Illuminating Engineering Society, the International Association of Lighting Designers, and the US Department of Energy represented by Pacific Northwest National Laboratories. The 2012 outdoor lighting competition includes street and roadway lighting.
The design competition allows judges from the lighting industry to evaluate sample fixtures in their intended applications. Included in the evaluation criteria are: color quality, appropriate illuminance, light distribution, BUG ratings, luminance and glare control, serviceability and replacement, energy efficiency, power quality, lumen maintenance, controllability, value, and appearance and style. Bonus points may be awarded for adjustability, flexibility, and innovation, among other categories. LED roadway luminaires submitted for evaluation must be in or near production and ready for specification.
The category for street and roadway lighting includes pole-mounted roadway luminaires (major roadways), pole-mounted street lighting luminaires (collector roads), pole-mounted street lighting luminaires (local residential roads), and pole-mounted decorative street lighting luminaires (streetscape).
